About USSD codes

What is a USSD code?

A USSD code is a short code that starts with * and ends with #, such as *737#. When you dial it, your network opens a menu from your bank or service provider, so you can send money, buy airtime or data, or check your balance.

Do USSD codes need internet or data?

No. USSD works over the mobile network, on smartphones and basic phones alike, even when you have no data or a weak signal.

Why doesn't my bank's USSD code work?

Most bank codes only work from the phone number registered to your account. If a code still fails, check you dialled it exactly, including the final #, then contact your bank. Their customer care numbers are on each provider's page.

Is banking by USSD safe?

Yes, as long as you keep your PIN to yourself. Your bank will never call or text to ask for your PIN. If your phone or SIM is lost or stolen, block your account straight away.
